A tension headache can range from a dull ache to sharp pain. It
can be felt as surface pain from tense
muscles in the region of the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) to the
upper regions of the neck and down into your shoulders.
The pain may change with chewing, yawning or
swallowing. Other headaches may feel like they are deeper in the
head, and may be related to restricted blood flow, dehydration, vision, or
a number of other
dysfunctions. If you have a prolonged headache, you should always seek
medical advice. |
Typical "Head Forward" posture causing the jaw to drift forward. The jaw may also drift laterally. |

For most common tension headaches and neck pain, a good massage may be the most logical place to start to get rid of the pain. Improving your posture and bringing the head back over the spine quickly takes the pressure off the neck muscles that so often hurt way past the base of the scull. Posture improvement often offers more unexpected benefits. When posture is corrected properly from the foundation up, not only will you look more erect from the side, but your body will be more symmetrical in the frontal plane (seen from the front or back). This has the potential for improving your bite and removing the tension patterns and sympathy pain from muscles around the TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint) and your temples. A more symmetrical bite will also influence your upper body posture and may help reduce tension on the Dura (membrane surrounding the brain and spine). Reducing hyperpronation is a key to posture improvement. If you work in front of a computer all day, you need to be particularly aware of your head posture. Bifocals will make your computer posture worse. Ask your eye doctor for "computer glasses". |

If you hyperpronate, your arches drop from non-weight bearing (sitting with your feet on the ground) to weight bearing (standing). When your arches drop, your ankles roll in and your heels lean in (evert) as illustrated in the picture. Even a small amount of hyperpronation can cause headaches. |
